PTO DRIVELINE
Can anyone help me out on what is causing my PTO driveline to slip off the ends, either off the PTO or the mower gearbox while I'm mowing.I just bought a JD790 with a new rear mower and the two times I,ve used the driveline has come off one of the ends.The dealer put it on and the first time it came off I made sure it was locked on good and it just came off the other end when I mowed yesterday. Thanks if anyone has had similar happen to them.

Nevin, I've never had that happen myself, and have only seen it happen once. If the mower and driveline are new, then the locking pin shouldn't be worn, and I'm assuming the splines on the tractor and mower should be in good shape. I can only guess that either it wasn't really on good, or else the spring in the lockpin is bad (and I sure would have expected the dealer to catch that if it was defective). In other words, I can't help you, but I'd sure be interested in hearing what you learn about that problem.

PTO DRIVELINE
I've not heard of one ever coming loose - it could be a dangerous thing. I hope that this doesn't sound silly, but here is how my PTO driveshaft works:
There is a button on the side of the part of the driveline that slips over the PTO shaft. This button is the visible part of spring-loaded locking pin. Now unless I depress that button, it won't even start to slide onto the PTO shaft. But once I depress the button and get it started onto the splines, I can let go of the button and continue to slide it farther onto the PTO shaft splines until the locking pin lines up with the circumfrential groove on the PTO shaft. At that point, the button automatically pops back out all by itself and the driveline is locked to the PTO shaft. Sometimes I have to give it a shake to make the button pop out, but it should be a sloppy enough fit that the button will pop out real easy. If it is reluctant to do so I always pull it back off of the PTO shaft and try to figure out why not.

Roger, I do about the same thing. Once it seems to be locked on, I push and pull both directions to see if it feels like it's locked on, and then make sure that little button has popped back out all the way. I didn't talk to the guy to ask what happened, but a few years ago, I saw a guy pull out of a shop on a big tractor with a big brush hog and start to mow down the highway right of way and he didn't go a hundred feet before the driveline came loose from the tractor (at full PTO speed). The centrifugal force of the blades kept that driveshaft banging and flopping around for quite some time, and that guy had sense enough to just sit there on the tractor until it stopped.
